Plumbing Tips for Summertime Plumbing Problems

Summertime means warm weather which ultimately means more outdoor activities. For some reason the more you entertain, the more likely you are to plumbing problems. Plumbing problems are never fun, at any time of year, but when you want to be carefree and enjoy vacation time, they are the last thing you want. Here are some plumbing tips for summertime plumbing problems.

#1 Clogged Toilet

When the kids are home from school for summertime, your toilets will see more use, especially if they have a friend over. It is important to stay on top of a clogged toilet by first of all educating your children and their guests about toilet usage. Make sure they know what not to flush down the drain. If clogs are becoming a consistent problem you may want to have a plumber take a look to make sure there are no obstructions.

#2 Water Waste

As temperatures start to rise, so do outside activities that involve water. Water usage naturally goes up during warmer months, as people are trying to cool off, and the yard might require more watering. This is fine; however, it is important to make sure you are making good choices with your water usage to prevent unnecessary waste. You will first want to check for any leaks around the house, inspect: toilets, under sinks, faucets, showerheads, and water supply lines. Repair any leaks right away. You may also want to consider upgrading your plumbing fixtures to more efficient models.

#3 Garbage Disposal Problems

The more entertaining you do the more you will utilize your garbage disposal. During heavy usage, is when most garbage disposals start to act up. To avoid plumbing problems with your garbage disposal it is important to practice good habits. Watch what you put down the garbage disposal; avoid putting large food particles, bones, grease, and trash down the garbage disposal. You will also want to make sure you always run your garbage disposal with running water. In addition, it is a good idea to clean and deodorize your garbage disposal at regular intervals. Ice can help knock buildup off of blades, while hot water, baking soda, and vinegar can help remove the rest of the debris and help deodorize.

#4 Sump Pump

For homes that are prone to flooding, most will have a sump pump. Sump pumps help remove water from areas like basements, and utility rooms that flood during heavy rains.  While many areas stay dry during the summer months, some areas get heavy monsoons that can wreak havoc. Make sure your sump pump is in good working order before the monsoon season starts. You can pour a bucket of water into the crock to make sure it activates. You should also check the drainpipe to make sure there are no clogs that would prevent the flow of water.

#5 Vacation

Vacation is part of the summertime. Anytime you leave your home for an extended period of time there is a risk that something can go wrong while you are away. Taking the proper precautions before you head out of town can help protect your home while you are away. Check for any leaks and make repairs. If you are leaving for an extended period of time you might want to turn off the main water supply and the water heater. This will not only help prevent plumbing problems while you are away but also help you conserve energy and water while you are away.
