Plumbing Tips to Help You Save Water Around the Yard

Outdoor water usage can account for a lot of water waste. From swimming pools to sprinkler systems, during the warmer months of the year, many people find themselves using more water to combat the heat. Fortunately, there are a lot of things that you can do to save water around the yard. Conserving water is important to not only save water but also save money on monthly utilities. Here are some plumbing tips to help you save water around the yard.

Swimming Pools

The luxury of having a swimming pool can be a lot of fun, not to mention refreshing during those hot days of summer. However, swimming pools also utilize a lot of water, and if you aren’t careful can end up wasting a lot of water as well.

One of the most important plumbing tips for your pool is to be proactive when it comes to leak detection. Just like the plumbing inside your house, your pools plumbing system is made up of pipes that can wear down and spring leak over time. Any plumbing leak is a bad thing for water conservation. Aside from looking for leaks you should also pay attention to your water bill, for any unexplained hikes.

Another tip to help you save water with your pool is to make sure your pool is properly covered. A good pool cover accomplishes several things.  A) It prevents dirt and debris from getting in your pool B) It helps heat your pool, which saves you money on operating the heater and C) Most importantly it helps slow down evaporation. As temperatures rise, so does the water off of your pool. Covering your pool helps prevent evaporation which makes it so you don’t have to refill your pool as much which helps you save water.

Sprinkler System

Watering your landscaping is a must in order to keep your plants alive. Sprinkler systems are made up of a network of pipes and sprinkler heads. Leaks can occur relatively easily from gardening and so forth. A busted sprinkler head can waste a lot of water over time, so it is important to make sure that you stay on top of leak detection with your sprinkler system and make repairs right away. In addition, setting a timer on your sprinkler system can help you save water as well. Set your timer to water early in the morning before the sun is high to allow for better saturation and less evaporation.
